Expeditions Overview

Africa Reading Expeditions is a voluntary intervention program run by Inside Africa Foundation, a Social Enterprise committed to preventing reading difficulties and reducing functional illiteracy among children in Africa. The expeditions provide one-to-one reading assistance to primary and high school children. As a volunteer traveller, you get a chance to help children who struggle with basic reading and comprehension skills.  Our expeditions provide transformational journeys for people who join from all walks of life, including young people from the host country.

Reading capacity among children in African countries is among the lowest in the world. Limited resources, lack of reading materials and encouragement by some African governments adversely affect the reading culture throughout most of Africa. Inside Africa’s Reading Expeditions is a multi-year initiative that focuses on promoting reading among children in Angola, Botswana, Kenya, Namibia, Malawi, South Africa, Sierra-Leone, Zimbabwe and Zambia.

In Africa, girls account for a majority of the approximately 33 million primary school-aged children who are not enrolled in school. Inside Africa Foundation seeks to bridge this gender gap by making sure that more girls are incorporated into the reading program, primarily to girls at the primary and secondary levels. Our hope is to have more girl readers growing into well read members of their societies and play positive roles in the education, political, and economic sectors of their countries. Girls will benefit from mentoring activities from the Programs which is designed to promote self-development and provide positive role models. The goal of the reading program is to expand the quantity and to improve the quality of learning materials that are available for girls in Africa  by providing five million student textbooks and workbooks, teacher handbooks and reading guides, handouts, worksheets, audio tapes, posters, vocabulary lists, and visual aids.

The program seeks to empower girls to be conscious of their rights, meaning that, young Girls in vulnerable situation will receive priority attention. Our organization believes that Girl related issues should not be bunched together with those of women or other children, but should be dealt with as a distinct group that need special attention and support. This is particularly important in the presence of HIV and AIDS which is taking an inordinate toll on African girls. Through the Africa Reading Expeditions, Inside Africa Foundation will become the voice of young girls who can now speak out on sensitive issues like rape, forced marriages, HIV and AIDS and pre-marital sex.

Our hope is to have at least five million African children going through the Inside Africa Reading Program by 2016.

Our Mission is to prepare African children overcome their challenges and their struggle for dignity.

Every African child deserves the right to education and access to reading books. At Inside Africa Foundation we believe that every African child deserves an education and life without prejudice.  Ironically it is often those children that needs help and support in achieving this foundation for a productive and happy life that receive the least education. We seek to deliver on our promises to children in Africa, so with our expertise and a dedicated team of people working to create innovative ways of finding reading solutions, we aim to always be the first point of call for children in Africa with complex reading needs.

We gain inspiration from everyone we work with, recognising how strong children can be if they truly believe in their own power to overcome reading problems. Every child we deal with is always seen as an individual so our reading methods always adapt to meet their needs every time.
